Mrs. Murphy's Spanish Class

September

WELCOME BACK!

My name is Maria Murphy and I am very excited to be teaching Spanish to your children. This is my 3rd year as part of the St.Peter of Alcantara Family and I'm pleased to say that I am now meeting with students in grades K - 8.

We have a lot of exciting things coming our way this month. We will be using technology in all of our classes while building basic language skills which will be a great foundation for language learning in the years to come.

faith

KINDERGARTEN: We will start with basic songs in Spanish to learn things like colors, numbers and simple words. New words will be introduced through song, poetry, and storytelling.

GRADES 1 & 2: Students learned the Days of the Week in Spanish. We practiced the days by singing a song in both English and Spanish to the tune of "Oh My Darling, Clementine".
Domingo, Lunes, Martes, Miercoles, Jueves, Viernes, Sábado

GRADES 3 & 4: Students are learning about Hispanic Heritage Month. The "Be Inspired" clip from Disney Channel is just one of the many videos viewed. Students will learn about the customs and traditions of the Spanish Speaking World while learning that they share a lot in common with children from around the world.

GRADE 5:
Students are learning about "definite" and "indefinite" articles. They are learning that words in Spanish are either masculine or feminine and will learn proper usage. We began learning how to make words plural and will be creating simple sentences.
Definite articles: el, la, los, las
Indefinite articles: un, una, unos, unas

GRADE 6: Students are reading about Mexico and El Salvador as part of our Hispanic Heritage Month discussion.
HOMEWORK: Students should complete workbook pages 5 & 6

GRADE 7: Students are learning Adjectives and will be able to describe themselves and others. We have added interrogative words to our vocabulary:
¿Quièn es? (Who is he/she?)    ¿Cómo es? (How is he/she?)
¿De dónde es? (Where are he/she from?)

Also, we have learned the verb "ser" (to be)
yo soy, tú eres, él es, ella es, usted es, nosotros somos, ellos son,
ellas son, ustedes son

QUIZ on 9/28 on the verb "ser" (see Middle School Test Page for more info)

GRADE 8: Students have added more sports vocabulary to their list:
el hockey (hockey) , el golf (golf), la natación (swimming) ,
el patinaje sobre hielo (ice skating) , el patinaje sobre ruedas (roller skating),
el voleiból (volleyball), el beisból (baseball), el basquetból (basketball)
Students will work on their Chromebooks to write a paragraph in Spanish about their favorite sport. They will select one of the sports vocabulary words then create a paragraph which describes why they enjoy that sport. They will use Google Docs to create this paragraph.

EXTRA HELP OPPORTUNITIES: If the need arises, I am available for extra help after school from 2:30 - 3:00 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

I look forward to a wonderful year!
Gracias.
